Menstrual disorder

  • Dysmenorrhea (painful periods) see below
  • Amenorrhea (lack of menstruation) see below
  • Menorrhagia (heavy periods)
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids

Dysmenorrhea:

Many women experience menstrual pain, in most cases, menstrual pain does not indicate a more serious problem, although sometimes it can be associated with endometriosis or uterine fibroids (non-cancerous tumors in the uterus). The medical term for menstrual pain is primary dysmenorrhea.

Primary dysmenorrhea usually starts 2 - 3 years after the first period, as a woman begins to ovulate regularly. Pain usually starts a day or two before menstrual flow, and may continue through the first 2 days the period. Often, pain gets better as a woman gets older, or after she has a child. Primary dysmenorrhea is caused by strong contractions of the uterus trigged by prostaglandins, chemicals in the body that are involved in inflammation and that stimulate pain receptors. Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more menstrual pain.

Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by underlying conditions, such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Symptoms and degree of pain vary, but may include the following:

  • Abdominal cramping or dull ache that moves to lower back and legs
  • Heavy menstrual flow
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Frequent urination
  • Vomiting (not common)

Acupuncture and herbs have shown to be very effective in reducing pain and other symptoms associated with dysmenorrhea. If you suffer from menstrual pain, call us today to see how we can help your condition.

Amenorrhea:

It is the absence of menstruation — one or more missed menstrual periods. Women who have missed at least three menstrual periods in a row have amenorrhea, as do girls who haven't begun menstruation by age 15.

Natural Amenorrhea

During the normal course of your life, you may experience amenorrhea for natural reasons, such as:

Hormonal Imbalances:

Thyroid malfunction: An overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can cause menstrual irregularities, including amenorrhea.

Pituitary tumor: A noncancerous (benign) tumor in your pituitary gland can interfere with the hormonal regulation of menstruation.

Acupuncture and herbs are a safe, natural and effective treatment for amenorrhea, for more information, please call our office.

Ovulation disorder include the followings:

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects 5-10% of women of childbearing age. PCOS is associated with: irregular menstrual cycles and anovulation (no ovulation), abnormal hair growth or loss, abdominal obesity, elevated insulin levels, elevated testosterone levels (which has a negative effect on egg quality), polycystic ovaries, dark patches of velvety skin on neck, arms, breasts or thighs, acne, and infertility. Studies have shown that both Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture can improve menstrual frequency, induce ovulation and reduce androgen levels therefore improving egg quality. Some studies have shown positive results in inducing ovulation and menstruation and lowering androgen levels in women with PCOS.

Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)

Premature ovarian failure is the loss of ovarian function and estrogen production in women under the age of 40. POF has a negative impact on fertility, but also lack of estrogen can cause other health issues such as increase cardiovascular problems, osteoporosis and many other health issues. Approximately, 1 in every 1000 women between the ages of 15-29 and 1 in every 100 women between the ages 30-39 are affected. Although the cause of POF is not known, one theory suggest that these patients have less than normal amount of follicles and/or loss follicles at a higher rate than average, another theory suggest that POF could be an autoimmune problem where body’s defense system attach ovaries causing higher follicular loss.

POF is often called premature menopause; although the symptoms may be similar, the conditions are quite different. Natural menopause occurs in late 40s to early 50s when women start having irregular menstruation and eventually the cessation of menstruation. Women with POF have irregular menstruation they may skip their period for a few months and then have a normal cycle for a few months. Other symptoms of OPF include, hot flashes or night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, vaginal dryness, loss of energy, diminished libido, painful intercourse and bladder control problems. Women with POF have elevated FSH level ( >40 mlU/ml), but some of these women continue to ovulate and have the capability to achieve pregnancy.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been shown to be effective at treating the symptoms associated with POF, such as elevated FSH, night sweats, vaginal dryness and insomnia, and deficient uterine lining. If you have been diagnosed with POF, acupuncture and Chinese medicine may offer a natural, safe, and effective option.

In order to increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and a healthy child, it is recommended that you optimize your health prior to conception for at least 3-6 months. Your body recruit eggs about 3 months prior to ovulation, this time is a window of opportunity to nourish your body and improve egg quality, and improve uterine environment for successful implantation. This approach to fertility and pregnancy is highly recommended for women with advanced maternal age. As women age, oxidation damage can impair egg quality and reduce blood flow to uterus and lower estrogen levels which have damaging effects on uterine lining impacting pregnancy. Studies have shown that the same age related damage have a negative impact on the sperm quality, count, morphology, and motility which can affect the pregnancy outcome. At Acuwellness Center, we offer preconception care for our patient which include, acupuncture and herbs, and nutritional consultation to prepare your body for your IVF/IUI or natural pregnancy. We also offer pre/post IVF treatments for our patients to help with increasing implantation rate.

Studies have shown as women age, the quality of follicles which are produced by their ovaries are compromised which can be measure via few different blood test. One of the most popular used blood tests which indicate ovarian reserve is FSH (follicle stimulating Hormone) test which is measured on day 2-3 of menstrual cycle. FSH is one of the hormones which are tested to determine ovarian reserve to determine menopause and premature ovarian failure, it also can determine follicular responsiveness to fertility treatments (IVF stimulation).
